Privacy Policy

This policy explains what Cookable collects, why we collect it, and how we keep it safe. We've tried to write it in plain English. If anything's unclear, email hello@cookable.food.

Who we are

Cookable is built by a small independent team. "We," "us," and "our" refer to the Cookable team. "You" or "the user" means anyone using the Cookable iOS app or the website at cookable.food.

What we collect

Account information

• Email address, name, and avatar from Sign in with Apple or Google Sign-In, used to create your account and personalise the app.
• A unique user ID generated by Firebase Authentication, used to associate your data with your account.

Profile + cooking data

• Dietary preferences, allergies, cooking goals, and skill level you set during onboarding, used to personalise recipes.
• Photos you take or upload of ingredients and finished dishes. Photos sent to the AI vision endpoint are forwarded to OpenAI for ingredient extraction and are not stored on our servers after processing. Photos you choose to post to the social feed are stored in Cloud Storage and visible to other Cookable users.
• Recipes you generate, favorite, or cook, your daily cooking streak, and any captions or notes you write.
• Feed activity — posts you publish, likes you give, comments you write.

Subscription information

• Subscription status (active / inactive, product ID, expiry date) we receive from Apple's StoreKit and from Superwall. We never receive or store your payment card details — those stay with Apple.

Technical data

• App diagnostics + crash logs may be sent to Apple and to our internal logs to fix bugs.
• Anonymous usage events like "Recipe Generated" or "Meal Cooked" so we can understand which features people use. These do not include the content of recipes or your photos.

What we don't collect

• We do not sell or rent your personal data to anyone, ever.
• We do not use third-party advertising SDKs.
• We do not track your location.
• We do not access your contacts, calendar, microphone, or camera roll unless you explicitly use a feature that needs it (e.g. picking a photo).

Who we share data with

We use a small number of vendors that act as data processors on our behalf:

• Firebase (Google Cloud) — authentication, database (Firestore), file storage, and push notifications.
• Google Cloud Run + Secret Manager — hosts our backend API and securely stores API keys.
• OpenAI — processes the photos you take of ingredients and the recipe-generation prompts. OpenAI does not use API data to train their models by default.
• Apple App Store + StoreKit — processes in-app purchases and reports subscription status.
• Superwall — manages paywall configuration and subscription state.

How long we keep your data

We keep your account and cooking data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account (Settings → Sign out → Delete account, coming soon — for now email hello@cookable.food) we delete your data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law (e.g. tax records for subscription payments).

Your rights

You can:

• Access, correct, or delete your personal data by emailing hello@cookable.food.
• Withdraw consent to data processing at any time (this may limit some app functionality).
• If you're in the EU/UK, you have rights under GDPR/UK-GDPR including the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
• If you're in California, you have rights under the CCPA, including the right to know what we collect and to request deletion.

Children

Cookable is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 where applicable). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

Security

Data is transmitted over HTTPS, stored in encrypted-at-rest Google Cloud services, and authenticated with Firebase ID tokens. No system is 100% secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we'll notify you in-app or by email. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
